Red and green, and what to do when everything is red and green

Christmas has the most fixed palette of any holiday: red and green, with gold and white to lift them. The green comes from the evergreens people brought indoors long before the tree existed, holly and ivy and pine, the plants that stay alive when everything else is bare. The red comes from holly berries, and later from Santa's suit. Every drawing in this collection sits somewhere in that scheme, which is both the pleasure and the trap.

The trap is that a page colored entirely in red and green goes flat. The fix is to leave things white. Snow, the fur trim on a hat, a beard, the icing on a gingerbread man, the cuff of a stocking: white is what makes red and green look like Christmas instead of a traffic light. Gold on a star or a bauble does the rest.

The drawings run from a Santa face with four areas to fill to a gingerbread house tiled in sweets, so there is something for a toddler with a fat crayon and something for an adult with an evening. Pick by the age shown on each page rather than by the subject.

Decide where the white stays before you start. On a Christmas page, the paper you leave alone does as much work as the color you put down.

Common questions

Which Christmas coloring page is easiest?

The smiling Santa face: a hat, a beard and two cheeks, with almost nothing else to fill. The gingerbread man with three buttons is nearly as simple.

Is there a Santa Claus coloring page?

Two: his face drawn large and easy, and Santa waving from his sleigh with the sack of presents loaded behind him.

What are the traditional Christmas colors?

Red and green, from holly berries and evergreen leaves, with gold and white added later. Leaving parts of the page white is what keeps those two strong colors from flattening the drawing.

Which one takes the longest?

The gingerbread house: every tile on the roof is a separate area, and the icing runs along every edge. The decorated tree comes next.

Can I color these online instead of printing?

Yes. Every drawing opens in the browser: pick a color, click inside an area and it fills. Your work is saved on your own device.
