A little elf stands with his hands on his hips, pointed ears out, a floppy hat with a pompom, a belted tunic and boots that curl up at the toes. Elf green and elf red are the expected choice, but swapping them round is the better page: a red hat over a green tunic, or the reverse, and the belt in brown either way. Elves as Santa's workshop helpers are a nineteenth-century American invention, from poems and magazine illustrations rather than any older tale. The stocking stuffed with toys has the same zigzag trim as his cuffs.
