A gingerbread house stands with a roof tiled in round sweets, icing piped along every edge, lollipops planted outside and a candy cane leaning by the door. It is the most detailed drawing in the collection: every tile on the roof is its own small area, which is the whole point of the page, and the reason to keep a fine pencil at hand. Gingerbread houses come from Germany, where they took off after the Brothers Grimm published Hansel and Gretel in 1812. The gingerbread man is the same dough with almost nothing on it.
How to color Sweet-covered gingerbread cottage
- A warm gingerbread brown for the walls and the roof base, slightly darker on the walls.
- pink + mint + yellow Alternate two or three colors across the roof tiles so the pattern reads.
- White for the icing along the edges, and bright colors on the lollipops and the candy cane.
